EDUCATION

Education Requirements

Complete a 4-year bachelor's degree program with a minimum of 30 semester credit hours, or equivalent, of surveying, mapping, and real property courses approved by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board.

Land Surveyor Intern Exam

Upon completion of the education requirements, the applicant may take the Fundamentals of Surveying Examination to become a Land Surveyor Intern.

Work Experience

Prior to becoming a Professional Land Surveyor the applicant must obtain at least four years of combined office and field experience in land surveying, including two years or more experience in responsible charge of land surveying projects under the supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor.

Final Exam

Upon successful completion of the above-listed education requirements, Fundamentals of Land Surveying Examination, and work experience, the applicant may apply to the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board for permission to take the Principles & Practice and the Louisiana Laws and Procedures Land Surveyor.

LSPS Scholarship

LSPS Education Foundation

The Louisiana Society of Professional Surveyors Education Foundation offers ten $500 Scholarships to be awarded yearly to College Students residing in Louisiana and pursuing a career in Land Surveying. Applicants must be working towards the 30 hours required by the LAPELS board for licensure or toward a degree in a LAPELS acceptable Geomatics program. For more information contact LSPS.

EMC (Every Member Campaign)

The Louisiana Society of Surveyors offers a $1000 scholarship for students planning to attend Nicholls State University. Our society has vowed to make this contribution to a High School Senior entering the Surveying/Geomatics profession. For more information contact LSPS.

Nicholls State University Geomatics Program

The NSU Bachelor’s degree program in geomatics is designed to offer college-level preparation that meets the educational requirements for registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in Louisiana. Geomatics integrates the traditional surveying definition with a variety of other spatial-related information. Geomatics is a fundamental to all geoscience disciplines that use spatially-related data. Those disciplines include geodesy, cartography, remote sensing, photogrammetry, geographic information systems, land information systems and global positioning systems. Scholarships are available to dedicated full-time Geomatics students, and each geomatic major is assigned an adviser in the Dept. of Applied Sciences.
